Barrie, Ontario has a population of 120,000, with a metropolitan population of 170,000 is located on Kempenfelt Bay, an arm of Lake Simcoe in south-central Ontario, Canada. It is the county seat of Simcoe County.
The city was named in 1832 after Sir Robert Barrie, who was in charge of the naval forces in what were then called the Canadas.
During World War II the Royal Canadian Navy named a Flower class corvette HMCS Barrie. It was named after Barrie the city not Barrie the man.
Settlment of Barrie began in the 1820's and shortly after Barrie was founded, the British established a military presence in the town. Canadian Forces Base Borden is still nearby.
Barrie's waterfront is at the heart of its tourism industry, with events like the Kempenfest arts and crafts festival attracting more than 300,000 people. Sports and recreational activities, like skiing, baseball, hockey and boating attract people to Barrie in all four seasons of the year.
Georgian College is in Barrie and has 3,500 full-time and 10,000 part-time students. This means that many of the bars and clubs in downtown Barrie are filled with students during the school year spending their student loans which they are later unable to repay. In the summer they go home or wait table.
The MacLaren Art Centre is in Barrie. It is an innovative art gallery that supports the visual arts in Simcoe County. It inspired the "Art City" project, which has had many different large sculptures installed around the city. These can be found in parks and along the scenic waterfront. So come to Barrie and see the sculptures. Since '87, Ron Baird's sculpture, Spirit Catcher, which was part of Vancouver's Expo the previous year, has been at the foot of Maple Avenue on the shore of Kempenfelt Bay.
